The St. Johns County Council on Aging, Inc. was founded in the fall of 1973 as a non-profit social services agency seeking to meet the needs of St. Johns County Elders. What began as a congregate meal program serving 60 on-site meals and 10 home-delivered meals has grown and matured to become what is now the “gateway to opportunity” for approximately 30,000 elders county-wide! The main 'campus' of the SJCCOA is located at 180 Marine St. in downtown St. Augustine. Additional additional satellite centers are; THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center, 175 Landrum Lane in Ponte Vedra Beach and Trout Creek Park Pavilion, 6795 Collier Rd. in Orangedale.
Services at the main center have been expanded from a basic congregate meal site to what now includes a full kitchen for daily congregate meals and for Meals on Wheels preparation, administrative offices, a social services department, community outreach programs, exercise facilities, a computer lab, Lifelong Learning programs, the Sunshine Center Therapeutic Adult Day Center, Care Connection, the Coastal Cafe and a Coastal Travel Club.
The SJCCOA transportation department now provides city-wide paratransit service for socialization at our three senior center sites and transportation to and from doctor and hospital appointments; And the Sunshine Bus Company is St. Johns County's only public transit system. The Sunshine Bus is a fixed route service that is accessible to riders of all ages.
As our elder community continues to grow we at the COA continue to actively search for creative and innovative ways to encourage active aging; a healthy lifestyle, inspirational learning experiences and the opportunity to socialize in a fun, convenient and safe environment. Plans for "River House" a newly designed community gathering center to be located on the banks of the beautiful Matanzas River are currently in the works with construction slated to begin shortly. The existing Coastal Community Center will become home to an expanded Sunshine Center, allowing as increased capacity to care for residents facing the challenges of Alzheimer's Disease or other illnesses involving memory loss and/or dementia.
The Council on Aging is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that receives support through the United Way, ElderSource, Area Agency on Aging for Northeast Florida, St. Johns County Board of Commissioners and private donations. Your gift helps us to help others!
